Totals: the over/under
Betting on combined points, and what pushes a total up or down.
A Glossary Total (over/under) A bet on combined points by both teams. Over 44.5 wins if they score 45 or more together; under wins at 44 or fewer. Full glossary , or over/under, ignores who wins. You’re betting on how many points both teams score combined.

Same price math as spreads: −110 means risk 1.1u to win 1u. If the total were 44 and the teams scored exactly 44, it would be a Glossary Push The result lands exactly on the number, like a 7-point win on a −7 spread. It’s a tie: the stake comes back, no win or loss. Full glossary Lesson: Spreads .
What moves a total
- Offenses and defenses. Two efficient offenses usually mean a higher number; two strong defenses, a lower one.
- Pace. Teams that run more plays create more chances to score. Teams that run the ball and use the clock create fewer.
- Injuries. A starting quarterback or a top receiver ruled out can drop a total fast.
- Weather. Strong, steady wind is the weather factor bettors watch most, because it affects passing and kicking. A light rain or a cold day often matters less than it looks on TV. Games in a dome skip weather entirely.
Other totals you’ll see
Books also post totals for one team (team totals), for halves and quarters, and for player stats (a type of Glossary Prop A bet on something other than the final result, like a player’s receiving yards. Full glossary Lesson: Using FRD ). The idea is the same: over or under a number.
Overtime points normally count toward full-game totals. House rules vary, so check the rules where you play.
Quick checkThe total is 51.5. Final score: 28–24. Which side won?Tap to see the answer
Over. 28 + 24 = 52, which is more than 51.5.
Key takeaways
- A total is a bet on combined points, not on who wins.
- Over wins above the number, under wins below it; a whole-number total can push.
- Pace, injuries and strong wind are the big movers. Domes take weather out of it.
