Play it safe: responsible gambling
Limits, warning signs, and where to get free help any time.
Everything in this path points the same way: the math favors the house, streaks are normal, and short runs are mostly luck. The healthiest way to bet is to treat it as entertainment with a cost, like a ticket to the game, and never as a way to make money you need.
Free, confidential, 24/7. 21+ only. Sports betting is legal only in some states; know your local laws.
Set limits before you start
- Money: a bankroll you can lose entirely, and a weekly limit in units.
- Time: decide when you’re done for the day before the first kickoff.
- Tools: licensed operators offer deposit, loss and time limits, cool-off periods and self-exclusion. Use them.
Keep a record. Your memory isn’t one.
In one study, researchers compared online gamblers’ own estimates of their past-month results with their actual betting records. Only 4.1% got within 10% of the real number, and 64.8% underestimated their losses (Heirene et al., summarized by BASIS). Writing every bet down, in My Picks or anywhere else, is the honest fix.
Signs it’s time to step back
- Betting more than you planned, or betting to win back losses
- Hiding bets from people close to you
- Borrowing money, or missing bills, because of betting
- Feeling anxious or irritable when you aren’t betting
- Betting isn’t fun anymore
If any of these sound familiar, take a break and call 1-800-GAMBLER. Talking to someone is free and confidential.

Skip it. The limit only works if it holds when you’re tempted. There will be another game next week. Our full page on responsible gaming has more.
